The Sandy Neiman Cancer Memorial Garden
Boyertown, PA
Spring of 2010
Cancer memorial garden is announced for Boyertown High School Memorial Stadium. To be located inside the southwest entrance to the stadium, the Sandy Neiman Cancer Memorial Garden is scheduled for a June dedication. The garden was conceived and designed by local designer Scott Rothenberger to honor a great friend, who did so much for others, and to create a venue for everyone in the community that has been affected in some way by the disease. Says Rothenberger: “It’s a place to reflect, to meditate, to pray, and to become one with nature”
The concept of the design is reminiscent of two clasping hands of friendship symbolically represented by two intersecting curvilinear walls. The taller wall becomes a retaining wall which is softened by draping plantings, the shorter wall curves around an irregular Pennsylvania Bluestone patio and becomes a sitting wall. As you sit on the lower wall there will be a memory poem on the opposite taller wall for viewing. The irregular stone pathway and patio with its tucked in steppable plantings is symbolic of the trials and tribulations we all face in our lives. The entire space is enveloped in multiple seasons of interest with the use of perennials, grasses, shrubs, flowering trees and ground covers.
Hardscape construction is scheduled to begin at the end of April. Planting will occur sometime in the middle to end of May. Donations
to fund the purchase of materials are being accepted through the Boyertown Area Community Wellness Council, be sure to write on your check that funds are to be used for the Cancer Memorial Garden. Boyertown Area Community Wellness Council serves the entire community in "promoting healthy lifestyles for all". The Council has been an established non-profit since 2005. An announcement will be made at a later date asking for volunteers to come out and dig in the dirt along with Scott on a Saturday or Sunday in May. Scott will be offering educational tips on gardening, landscape design, and the use of unique plant material. It will be a fun community involvement weekend getting to work alongside a recognized professional.
